Drivers are being told to slow down, with school zones back in force across NSW from Monday, 12 October, and heavy fines and demerits waiting for anyone who ignores them.
Transport for NSW is reminding motorists that Monday is still a gazetted school day. Executive Director at Transport Chadi Chalhoub said some schools may have a school development day on Monday, but there are schools where students are attending.
“To help protect children, who are some of our most vulnerable road users, school zones will be in place across NSW from Monday morning,” said Mr Chalhoub.
“I’m reminding everyone to slow down, obey the 40km/h speed limit and drive with care, children are less road safety aware than adults and don’t always think before they cross the road.”
School zones generally apply from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm on weekdays. Motorists who don’t obey the rules face heavy fines and demerits.
Some schools have non-standard school zone times, and some have 30km/h speed limits during school zone times. Drivers can identify these locations by the red or orange school zone signs, which show the times.
“If you’re on the road look out for school zone flashing lights and signs near schools and follow the rules carefully,” Mr Chalhoub said.
“Slowing your journey down by a few kms might add a few extra minutes to your trip but it could also save a life.”
Drivers are also reminded to slow down around school buses.
“A reminder for anyone travelling around our school buses as well to slow down, and not to drive faster than 40km/h around school buses when their lights are flashing.”
“This rule applies whether the bus is stationary or moving.”
