Uralla water upgrades aim to protect supply and reduce waste for residents

New flow meter at Water Treatment Facility

Uralla residents are expected to benefit from a more reliable water supply and reduced water waste following the completion of upgrades to the town’s water network.

Uralla Shire Council has completed a Regional Leakage Reduction Program project designed to identify leaks earlier, improve water management and help protect the community’s water resources into the future.

The project, funded through the NSW Government’s Water Loss Management Grant, has introduced new monitoring technology to help Council detect problems before they develop into more significant issues.

The improvements are expected to support a more efficient water network, reduce unnecessary water loss and help Council make better decisions about future infrastructure investments.

Upgrades include new flow meters at the Water Treatment Plant, pressure monitoring equipment, acoustic leak detection technology and improved mapping of underground water infrastructure.

Council has also undertaken hydraulic network modelling and a water balance assessment to better understand how water moves through the system and identify potential losses.

Testing of older household water meters found many were recording less water than was being used, supporting Council’s ongoing program to replace ageing meters.

Uralla Shire Mayor Robert Bell said the project would deliver lasting benefits for the community by improving the reliability and efficiency of the town’s water supply.

“This grant has given Council valuable equipment, data and insights that will help us identify water losses earlier, improve network performance and make better-informed decisions about future infrastructure investment,” Bell said.

“It’s about being proactive, reducing waste and ensuring we have a resilient and efficient water network to serve our community into the future.”

With the upgrades complete, Council will introduce an ongoing pressure and leak monitoring program to help identify water losses and address network issues more effectively.

The program is intended to strengthen the town’s water security, improve infrastructure planning and ensure valuable water resources are managed responsibly.

Bell said the investment had provided Council with the tools needed to continue improving the network for residents.

“The grant has provided a strong foundation for smarter water management and has equipped our team with the tools needed to progressively improve the efficiency and reliability of the network,” he said.
