Young people finishing school across the Parkes electorate now have a guide to help them work out what comes next.
The 2026 School Leavers’ Guide is available now. Federal Member for Parkes Jamie Chaffey put it together to help students make the move from school to their next step. Mr Chaffey said the months ahead would bring plenty of big decisions for those finishing school.
“There are so many choices for school leavers that it can feel confronting,” Mr Chaffey said.
“Whether it is university, TAFE, an apprenticeship, work, a gap year or something completely different.”
“There is no single right path, and working out what comes next is not always easy.”
“My own path to Federal Parliament was through an apprenticeship as a boilermaker, and I know the journey can be winding and bring a lot of satisfaction along the way.”
The guide covers education and training options, financial and other support, finding employment, and keeping good mental health. It also lists useful websites and extra information, such as enrolling to vote and Medicare.
“Most of us know a young person facing those decisions,” Mr Chaffey said.
“They might be a son or daughter, a grandchild, a niece or nephew, a family friend or someone in our local community.”
“As your local Member of Parliament, I want young people in our community to have the information they need to make the choice that is right for them.”
“That’s why I’ve put together a School Leaver’s Guide, bringing together practical information and resources to help young people plan their next step after school.”
Mr Chaffey also sponsors a Federal Member for Parkes Vocational Award each year. One student in each of the secondary schools across the electorate receives it, to encourage those who are excelling in their chosen trade while at school.
The guide is available on Mr Chaffey’s website at https://www.jamiechaffey.com.au/school-leavers-guide/.
