Gwydir Highway works to impact motorists for six months

Motorists travelling on the Gwydir Highway through Gibraltar Range can expect changed traffic conditions for about six months as roadworks begin at Hills Lookout and Sugarloaf Bend.

Work will start on Tuesday, 6 October, with single-lane closures, traffic lights, alternating stop-slow traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h in place during work hours.

Crews will generally work on weekdays and some Saturdays between 6.30am and 6pm.

Motorists should also prepare for 24-hour traffic control at Hills Lookout for up to two weeks from late October. A minimum three-metre-wide travel lane will remain open during that period.

Transport for NSW is constructing slow vehicle turnout lanes at both locations, with work expected to take about six months to complete, weather permitting.

The project includes culvert widening and replacement, road widening, drainage works, guardrail works and kerb replacement.

The new turnout lanes are intended to improve safety, reduce crash rates, improve travel times and support freight movements along the highway.

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic controllers.
