More than 4,750 Inverell homes and businesses can now order a full fibre upgrade, and NBN staff will be in town next week to help locals make the switch.
The premises are connected through Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) and Fibre to the Node (FTTN), and can now place an eligible order to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
Over 2,900 homes and businesses in Inverell’s FTTC footprint no longer need a high-speed plan to order the upgrade.
NBN is prioritising the FTTC network for accelerated transition from copper, as it has higher fault rates than the company’s other copper-based networks.
FTTC uses a mix of fibre and legacy copper cabling. A full fibre upgrade replaces the remaining copper with fibre optic cable all the way to the premises.
That can mean smoother, higher-resolution video calls, better streaming, faster downloads, and the ability to connect more devices at once.
“Households are consuming more data than ever for the things they love, like streaming 4K on multiple devices, online education, next-level gaming, conference calls, and uploading and downloading large files for work,” said NBN Head of Regional Engagement NSW Tom O’Dea.
NBN is also working to upgrade infrastructure in Inverell so more residents on FTTN can switch to full fibre.
Fixed wireless users are getting a boost too. Many locations served by NBN fixed wireless in the Inverell region can now access higher speeds, as nationwide upgrades lift speeds during busy periods and bring the fastest wholesale speeds yet offered on the network.
The work is part of a $750 million investment in the NBN Fixed Wireless network, with $480 million from the Australian Government and $270 million from NBN.
The upgrades aim to deliver more coverage, less congestion, and much faster speeds, especially at busy times. Sky Muster satellite customers have also benefited, with uncapped plans now on offer.
The NBN team will be at Inverell Newsagency from 9am to 2pm on Tuesday, 29 September, Wednesday, 30 September, and Thursday, 1 October.
Staff will help locals check their eligibility and explain how the upgrades work.
“I encourage the local community to participate in our upcoming nbn local events to discover how full fibre can benefit them,” Mr O’Dea said.
