University of New England meat scientist Professor Peter McGilchrist has been recognised for decades of service and scientific contributions to Australiaโs beef industry with the 2026 Howard Yelland Beef Industry Award.
The award, first presented in 1987, recognises primary producers, scientists and industry leaders who have made significant contributions to the beef sector beyond their formal roles.
“It was a great honour, and I was genuinely humbled to receive the Howard Yelland Award,โ said Professor McGilchrist.
“Iโm fortunate that my career has allowed me to combine the things I love; meat science, the beef industry and working with young people.”
Professor McGilchrist has spent his career combining meat science research with teaching and mentoring the next generation of industry professionals.
His voluntary work includes 20 years on the Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) committee, including the past 12 years as president.
He has also played a significant role in promoting greater use of measurement, objective assessment and evidence-based decision-making across the beef industry.
โMy research in meat science, eating quality, Meat Standards Australia (MSA), carcass value and objective measurement has been directed at solving real problems for the beef industry rather than simply producing academic research,โ he said.
โProbably my proudest outcome is the development of the MSA Index which is used right across the Australian beef industry for benchmarking carcass quality.โ
Professor McGilchrist joins a long list of UNE alumni and staff who have received a Howard Yelland Award, including Dr Arthur Rickards, Dr Keith Hammond, Bob Freer, Dr Rod Polkinghorne, Dr Bernie Bindon, Dr John Thompson, Dr Hans-Ulrich Graser and Dr Christian Duff.
โThis shows that UNEโs expertise and impact for the beef industry isnโt just a flash in the pan but a sustained effort over many decades.โ
