Work has begun on a new overtaking lane on the New England Highway south of Tamworth as part of a $5 million road safety upgrade.
The Australian and NSW governments are jointly funding the project under the Road Safety Program, with the new lane to be built about 30 kilometres south of Tamworth between Tamworth and Willow Tree.
The 1.2-kilometre overtaking lane is designed to improve safety and traffic flow for motorists travelling south on the highway.
The project will also widen sealed shoulders, extend concrete drainage, realign and resurface sections of the existing road, install a one-metre-wide centre line treatment and add new guard rails and road safety signage.
Transport for NSW is carrying out the work, which is expected to be completed by late March 2027, weather permitting.
Work will generally take place between 6.30am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, with work also scheduled during those hours on Saturdays when required.
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the project would improve a key regional transport route.
“The Albanese and Minns governments are investing in essential road infrastructure that will serve people living in, working in, and visiting regional NSW for many years to come.” said McBain.
“Safety on our roads is a top priority, and with works beginning on New England Highway, this is another example of our commitment to protecting all road users.
“Once complete, these upgrades will ensure safer, smoother and more efficient journeys for the thousands of commuters who travel along this busy corridor each day.”
NSW Roads and Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison said the highway was an important connection for residents and freight operators.
“Getting on with upgrades like this is about making sure regional communities have the safe and reliable road networks they deserve.” said Aitchison.
“The New England Highway serves as a critical connection for thousands of residents and freight operators every day, which is why safety improvements are so important.
“This new overtaking lane will provide safer and more efficient connections across the region, helping road users travel to work, return home as well as transport essential goods and services.”
NSW Senator Tim Ayres said the investment would deliver practical safety improvements.
“The New England Highway is an important piece of infrastructure for residents, agriculture and local industry.” said Ayres.
“This joint investment from the Australian and New South Wales governments delivers practical improvements that will help improve road safety between Willow Tree and Tamworth.”
