More community-based organisations and registered charities can now apply for funding under Gunnedah Shire Council’s newly revised 2026-2027 Small Grants Program.
The program, run under Section 356 of the Local Government Act, merges what were previously three separate schemes, the Community and Sports Small Grants, Arts and Cultural Small Grants, and the Access Incentive Grants, into a single program intended to be more accessible, seamless and easier to administer.
Key changes include removing restrictions that had made groups already receiving other financial assistance from council ineligible, and introducing minimum and maximum funding allocations of between $500 and $5,000 per application, depending on the project. A requirement for co-contribution has also been removed, though the grants cannot be used to waive the cost of council facilities or services, and retrospective projects remain ineligible.
To be eligible, applicants must be not-for-profit, incorporated, community-based organisations or registered charities that are local to the Gunnedah Shire, or that provide a service to it.
Council’s Community and Social Planner Debra Hilton said the changes would streamline the application process and help more local organisations apply for and receive funding.
“We recognise the valuable contribution these organisations make to the fabric of our community, and in particular, the volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds to keep those organisations functioning,” Ms Hilton said.
“When assessing the applications, priority will be given to those projects and initiatives that not only help organisations to grow and be sustainable, but also those that add to the vibrancy of our broader community.
“Now is the perfect time for community groups to explore new ideas or continue valued projects that can make a lasting impact on both their organisation and the broader community.”
The Small Grants Program will close at 5pm on Monday, 28 September. Application forms and the grants policy are available on council’s website at gunnedah.nsw.gov.au.
