A 49-year-old man has been charged after allegedly punching a police officer in the face in Inverell last week.
Officers attached to New England Police District were called to Brae Street, Inverell, about 7.30pm on Friday, 21 August, following reports of a concern for welfare.
Police will allege the man was found standing on the roadway and threatened officers before attempting to fight attending police. He allegedly punched an officer in the face, causing a laceration.
Officers used OC spray and a Taser to arrest the man, who was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Inverell Police Station.
He was charged with five offences: assault police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm, behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place or school, using offensive language in or near a public place or school, hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty, and using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
He was refused bail and faced Bail Division Court 5 on Saturday, 22 August, where he was granted strict conditional bail to reappear at Inverell Local Court on Thursday, 27 August.
It is the second time a police officer in Inverell has been put in danger on the job in a matter of weeks, with an altercation in Otho street in May seeing a man charged wih threatening and intimidating a police officer.
