Motel altercation in Inverell leaves one in hospital, other in jail

A man has been refused bail after allegedly attacking another man with a wine glass at an Inverell motel before allegedly threatening police officers following his arrest.

Emergency services were called to a motel on Otho Street, Inverell, about 2am on Sunday 17 May 2026 following reports of an assault.

Officers from New England Police District arrived to find a 24-year-old man suffering serious injuries after an alleged altercation.

Police will allege the younger man was assaulted with a wine glass by a 41-year-old man during the incident.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 24-year-old at the scene before he was taken to Inverell Hospital with serious head and facial injuries.

About 4am, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to transfer the man to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

The man, aged in his 20s, was stabilised by hospital staff and the helicopter’s critical care medical team before being airlifted to Newcastle in a stable condition.

Police arrested the 41-year-old man at the motel and took him to Inverell Police Station.

Officers will further allege the man made threats towards several police officers while in custody at the station.

He has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, reckless wounding and two counts of intimidating a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm.

The 41 year old man was refused bail.
