New England Girls’ School (NEGS) will open its Armidale campus to prospective students and their families for an Open Morning on Friday, 28 August, as the school marks more than 130 years of regional education.
Founded by Florence Green in 1895, NEGS has educated girls from across regional, rural and remote Australia for generations. The school now welcomes girls and boys from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 in its co-educational Junior School, before continuing a specialist girls’ education from Years 7 to 12, including boarding for secondary students.
The Open Morning, starting at 9.30am, will give families the chance to explore the school’s academic, boarding, sporting and co-curricular programs, meet staff and students, and experience the community NEGS says has shaped generations of its students. As girls progress through the senior years, the school says they are encouraged to discover their strengths and develop their independence, with opportunities spanning academics, sport, equestrian, agriculture, music, leadership and community service.
The school says its smaller scale allows students to be recognised as individuals, while its Armidale location gives them room to learn, participate and grow, offering what it describes as a connected educational journey from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 12.
Principal Liz van Genderen said the school’s size meant every student was known individually.
“NEGS offers a community in which every student is genuinely known, by their teachers, boarding staff, coaches and peers,” she said.
“That sense of belonging gives young people the confidence to challenge themselves, discover their strengths and become increasingly independent. It is an approach that has remained at the heart of NEGS for more than 130 years.”
