Locals will gather at the Big Welder’s Dog Brewery on August 11 for Energy in the Pub, a free community event focused on renewable energy, regional development and the future of the New England.
While much of the debate about the REZ is dominated by a few loud voices of opposition, this event is intended to be much less confrontational, a sensible discussion of the “moderate middle” about the opportunities and challenges that come with the renewable transition.
Hosted by Sustainable Living Armidale, UNE SMART Region Incubator, Electrify Armidale and Community Power Agency, the evening will feature short presentations, a panel discussion, energy trivia and free pizza.
The event will bring together local residents, researchers, council representatives and renewable-energy stakeholders to discuss planning, water, biodiversity, First Nations engagement and the New England Renewable Energy Zone.
Speakers include Armidale Mayor Sam Coupland, UNE academics Professor Melanie Fillios, Professor Chris Armstrong and Dr Sanaz Alian, as well as representatives from Armidale Regional Council, EnergyCo, Uralla Shire Council and community organisations.
“Energy in the Pub is designed to make an important regional conversation accessible, welcoming and useful,” organisers said. “Whether people are already deeply involved or are simply curious about what the renewable transition means for their community, this is a chance to hear updates, ask questions and connect with others.”
Topics will include EnergyCo’s cumulative-impact studies, local water and governance issues, employment and community-benefit programs, biodiversity planning, household energy upgrades and Uralla’s Renewable Energy Strategic Action Plan.
Organisers said the event would focus on how communities can benefit from renewable development while ensuring the region’s future is planned responsibly.
“We want a just, informed and community-led energy transition for New England,” organisers said. “The best outcomes will come when local knowledge and local voices are part of the conversation.”
Energy in the Pub will be held at The (Big) Welder’s Dog Brewery, 101 Beardy Street, Armidale, from 5.30pm for a 6pm start, finishing at 8.30pm. The event date was changed from July 28 to August 11.
The gathering forms part of the FRRR-funded Armidale Community-Driven Shift to Renewable Energy and Sustainability program, supported by the Paul Ramsay Foundation’s Community Led Climate Solutions grant program.
