Moree Plains Shire Council has brought its Ranger services in-house, with the new team to focus initially on stray and roaming dogs in response to ongoing community concerns.
The Rangers will also respond to urgent after-hours and weekend call-outs and carry out compliance activities across the shire, including managing overgrown lots, illegal dumping and parking enforcement.
Mayor Susannah Pearse said bringing Ranger services back in-house had been a long-term goal for Council.
“Having our own Rangers has always been Council’s goal. Employing people who live in our communities means they understand local issues, can build relationships with residents and provide a more responsive service.”
“Importantly, our in-house team will also be available to respond to urgent Ranger matters after hours and on weekends, providing the community with a more consistent and reliable service when it is needed most.”

Council is encouraging pet owners to ensure their animals are securely contained, microchipped and lifetime registered.
Dogs found roaming in public places will be impounded. Owners reclaiming an impounded dog will be required to pay release fees and may also receive infringement notices, including a $330 penalty for a dog that is not under effective control in a public place.
The Rangers will continue to educate pet owners while carrying out regular patrols and enforcing the Companion Animals Act 1998.
Residents can report stray or roaming dogs, request Ranger assistance or enquire about surrendering an animal by contacting Council’s Rangers on (02) 6757 3222 or emailing rangerservices@mpsc.nsw.gov.au.
Council has also resolved to deliver a new companion animal shelter at the Moree Waste Management Facility in the 2026–27 financial year. The facility will provide a safe, compliant and fit-for-purpose space for the management, care and rehoming of companion animals.
The Draft Keeping of Animals Policy is on public exhibition until 5 pm on Thursday, 13 August. Community members are invited to provide feedback during the exhibition period.
