Community invited to help shape the future of Moree Plains Shire’s parks and recreation spaces

Help Shape The future of The Moree Plains Shire’s Parks and Recreational Spaces.

Moree Plains Shire Council is calling on residents, community organisations, sporting groups and recreation clubs to help shape the future of the Shire’s parks, sporting facilities and youth recreation spaces by completing a community survey or attending a local consultation session.

Community feedback will help inform the development of Council’s new Open Space Strategy, a long-term plan that will guide future investment in and maintenance of Moree Plains Shire’s network of parks, recreation spaces, public trails, sporting fields and youth recreation areas.

Council has engaged an external consultant to assist with developing the strategy, which will identify current and future open space needs across the Shire.

“We need to hear from the community about their needs and aspirations for our open space facilities across the Shire so we can deliver appropriate facilities and maintain them as well as providing guidance on priority items for applying for grants for improvement programs,” said Director of Infrastructure Michael Malone.

Community feedback will help Council better understand how existing facilities are used, identify where improvements are needed and ensure future planning reflects the needs and priorities of local communities.

The strategy aims to create a more connected network of parks and green spaces that enhances liveability, encourages active lifestyles and celebrates the region’s natural environment. It will also explore opportunities to strengthen tourism and economic development through improved recreation and open spaces across the Shire.

The strategy is being developed in collaboration with Council staff, councillors and community groups and will align with Council’s Community Strategic Plan. It focuses on outdoor parks, recreation areas and public open space and does not include indoor sporting or community facilities.

Residents are encouraged to attend one of the following community consultation sessions:

  • Moree: Monday, 6 July, 5:30pm–6:30pm, Council Chambers, MAX Centre, Level 2, 30 Heber Street
  • Mungindi: Tuesday, 7 July, 5:30pm–6:30pm, Community Centre RTC, 153 St George Street
  • Boggabilla: Thursday, 9 July, 5:30pm–6:30pm, Town & Country Club, corner of North and Yeoman streets

Those unable to attend a consultation session can still have their say by completing the Moree Open Space Strategy Community Survey here.

Council encourages everyone with an interest in the future of the Shire’s parks and recreation spaces to participate and share the survey with family, friends and community networks.
