A 19-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly threatening two men with a knife on Tamworth’s main strip in the early hours of Sunday morning, in an incident that saw him brandish the weapon at hotel security guards before police arrested him in the carpark.
Officers attached to Oxley Police District were called to a hotel on Peel Street about 12.15am on Sunday, 29 June, following reports of an assault. Police were told the 19-year-old had allegedly threatened a man in his 20s with a knife before chasing him along Peel Street.
He then allegedly returned to the hotel, where he threatened security staff with the knife and made verbal threats before police arrived and arrested him in the carpark.
A knife was seized at the scene.
The man was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with nine offences: three counts of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, three counts of stalking or intimidating with intent to cause fear of physical harm, using violence with three or more people to cause fear, custody of a knife in a public place, and assault.
He was refused bail at Bail Division Court 5 on Sunday and will reappear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday, 13 July. Inquiries are continuing.
