NBN fixed wireless rollout coming to Walcha region

More than 120 homes and businesses around Walcha will soon gain access to upgraded nbn fixed wireless internet as part of a major regional connectivity push across northern NSW.

The rollout is being delivered through the Regional Digital Connectivity Program, with the NSW Government contracting nbn to improve broadband services in regional communities.

Work is already underway around Walcha, with nbn delivery partner Ventia installing a new fixed wireless tower in the area.

The upgraded service is expected to provide faster and more reliable internet connections for households and businesses, including improved video calls, faster downloads, smoother streaming and the ability to connect more devices at once.

The technology uses 4G and 5G mmWave transmission from towers to antennas installed on rooftops, with speeds of up to 250Mbps available in some areas.

NSW Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said improved digital access was essential for regional communities.

“This investment ensures the community has access to reliable, high-speed broadband that makes a genuine difference in everyday life. Local businesses, students and families all benefit,” Ms Moriarty said.

“This NSW Government investment is a commitment to our regional communities. It helps keep them connected, supports families and local jobs, and lays the groundwork for a prosperous future.”

Tom O’Dea said fixed wireless services had become increasingly important for regional Australia.

“The nbn Fixed Wireless network is a critical part of our infrastructure, supporting regional Australian homes and businesses with faster speeds and more reliable connectivity than ever before, even during the busiest times,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Australians deserve access to fast, effective broadband, regardless of whether they live in a major city or a country town.”

Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes welcomed the investment, saying reliable internet was increasingly critical for regional communities.

“Council welcomes this investment in improved digital connectivity around Walcha,” Cr Noakes said.

“Reliable broadband is critical to supporting our local economy, services, and the long-term prosperity of our community.”

The Walcha rollout comes as other northern NSW communities also receive major nbn upgrades.

More than 3,300 homes and businesses in Narrabri are now eligible to upgrade to full fibre through nbn Fibre to the Premises technology.

In the Tamworth region, more than 18,000 homes and businesses have become eligible for fibre upgrades, with more than 3,000 already connected to full fibre services. Eligible suburbs include parts of Calala, East Tamworth, Hillvue, Kootingal, Manilla, Moore Creek, North Tamworth, Oxley Vale, South Tamworth, Taminda, West Tamworth and Westdale.

The nbn Local team will also host a series of information pop-ups in Tamworth and Narrabri to help residents check eligibility and understand the fibre upgrade process.

Tamworth sessions will be held at Tamworth Shopping World and Tamworth Square throughout May and June, while Narrabri residents can visit information hubs every Thursday and Friday during May.
