The Warialda Shop of Opportunity officially opened on Saturday, May 2, drawing strong local support and marking the end of a three-year community-led project.
Located in Warialda, the new op shop is an initiative of the Warialda Community Warriors, a volunteer group focused on strengthening local connections and supporting grassroots projects.
President Angela Turner said the opening was a proud moment for the many locals who had contributed their time and skills to bring the space to life.
“I am the president of the committee that has, found it and got it up and going, but essentially the store belongs to the community,” she said.
The shop operates out of the former Jimmy Bowman’s General Store, a site remembered fondly by many residents. Rather than demolish the ageing structure, the group committed to restoring it, preserving both its character and its history.
“There was so much history tied up in that space,” Ms Turner said. “People remember going there as kids, if they didn’t have money, they’d still be given something.”
The restoration effort drew widespread community support, with local tradespeople, volunteers and organisations contributing materials, labour and time. Recycled timber and salvaged materials feature throughout the fit-out, giving the shop a distinctly local feel.
“When we first advertised to meet and discuss what it could look like, I expected maybe a handful of people, but the room was absolutely full,” she said.
After several years of planning and setbacks, the committee made the decision to set a firm opening date.
“We just decided as a committee, let’s do the 2nd of May and make it happen,” she said.
That decision paid off, with a steady stream of visitors passing through the doors on opening day. Volunteers were kept busy as locals browsed, donated goods and took the opportunity to reconnect.
“Any profits will filter back into our community but just having a place where people can come together, laugh and socialise – that’s what’s really special,” Ms Turner said.
Staffed by around 40 volunteers, the Shop of Opportunity is already shaping up as more than just a retail space, with plans to expand its role in the town.
“Oh 100 per cent, it’s going to become a real hub,” she said. “We’ve got dreams – maybe a community pantry or even a small nursery down the track.”
Funds raised through the shop will be reinvested locally, supporting a range of initiatives from small community needs to larger projects over time.
The shop is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am to 2pm, Saturdays from 9am to 12pm, and on the first Wednesday of each month from 5pm to 7pm.
“We’re really selling it that absolutely everyone is welcome,” Ms Turner said. “Whether people want to volunteer or just come in for a chat, there’s a place for everyone here.”
The store is located at 32 Plunkett Street, Warialda. To find out more about the Shop of Opportunity, you can follow them on Facebook.
