Armidale Regional Council will implement Level 2 water restrictions from 30 April in response to declining dam levels, ongoing dry conditions and increasing pressure on local water supplies.
Council’s latest water usage and supply data shows storage levels continue to fall, with limited rainfall forecast and warmer conditions expected in the months ahead. While water remains available, the move to Level 2 restrictions is a proactive step to slow the rate of drawdown and help protect the region’s long-term water security.
Level 2 restrictions build on existing measures and require residents and businesses to further reduce water use, particularly for outdoor activities. The measures are designed to reduce overall demand and avoid the need for more severe restrictions if dry conditions persist.
Water use has increased significantly since Level 1 restrictions were introduced, rising by an average of 41.2 per cent in Armidale and 68.3 per cent in Guyra. This has brought forward the move to Level 2 restrictions.
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Sam Coupland said the focus was on adopting best-practice water use now to protect long-term supply and prevent a “Day Zero” scenario.
“We know from past experience how quickly our water situation can change. Introducing Level 2 restrictions now gives our community the best chance to protect our water supply and avoid tougher measures later,” said Coupland.
“Every litre saved today helps secure water for essential needs in the months ahead.”
Council will continue to closely monitor dam levels, inflows, climate indicators and water consumption across the region. Community cooperation during Level 2 restrictions will play a critical role in maintaining water supply resilience.
Under the restrictions, residents are asked not to use sprinklers to water lawns or gardens, with a target reduction from 180 litres per person per day under Level 1 to 170 litres under Level 2. As part of the response, council will continue community education on best-practice water use, drawing on lessons from previous droughts to encourage households, businesses, schools and visitors to make water-wise choices early.
Residents and businesses are urged to familiarise themselves with the Level 2 restrictions and adjust water use accordingly.
Council is also encouraging residents to take advantage of existing water conservation initiatives, including water tank rebates, to reduce reliance on town water supplies during dry conditions. With Level 2 restrictions in place, installing a rainwater tank can help reduce overall demand while delivering long-term benefits for households.
The rebate is one of several initiatives delivered by council, alongside projects such as the Regional Drought Resilience Planning (RDRP) program, to help the region prepare for and manage drought.
