Telstra will upgrade its mobile base station servicing Inverell, aiming to improve 4G and 5G performance for local users.
The works are expected to increase the site’s capacity, delivering faster download speeds, smoother streaming and reduced network congestion as demand for mobile data continues to rise.
Construction is scheduled to begin on 30 April 2026 and will run for approximately 10 days. During this period, the site will be switched off for up to eight hours at a time between 7am and 5pm to allow works to be completed safely.
Telstra Regional General Manager Mike Marom said the upgrade was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity across regional Australia.
“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country,” Marom said.
“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G/5G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion for customers.”
Mr Marom acknowledged the temporary disruption but said outages would be kept to a minimum.
“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible,” he said.
Telstra advised that customers would receive SMS notifications ahead of the planned works. The outages will not affect NBN, satellite internet services, PSTN landlines or mobile coverage from other providers.
Calls to Triple Zero from Telstra mobiles during outages will automatically connect to another available mobile network to ensure access to emergency services.
Customers are encouraged to enable Wi-Fi Calling on compatible devices to continue making and receiving calls and texts during disruptions. Businesses are also advised to speak with their bank about connecting EFTPOS terminals to NBN or Wi-Fi networks to avoid transaction delays.
Telstra noted that while every effort is made to adhere to the schedule, timing and impacts may change due to factors outside its control. Updates will be available at telstra.com.au/outages.
