The new Namoi Gwydir Fire Control Centre in Narrabri is nearing completion, marking a significant boost to emergency response capability in north-west NSW.
The $13.1 million facility will provide the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) with a modern, purpose-built base to support future operations. It responds to recommendations from the 2019–20 Bushfire Inquiry, replacing an ageing centre no longer suited to a contemporary Emergency Operations Centre.
Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said the project would strengthen the state’s preparedness.
“It was great to be in Narrabri to see the progress on this important project,” he said.
“This is a significant investment in community safety, ensuring our emergency services are equipped to respond to increasingly complex incidents.
“This facility reflects lessons learned from the 2019–20 bushfires and strengthens our preparedness for future emergencies.”
The development includes a co-located, multi-agency Emergency Operations Centre to improve coordination during major incidents. It will also house a new station for the Narrabri Headquarters Brigade and dedicated mitigation crew facilities.
Features will include updated operational workspaces, training rooms, specialised support infrastructure, a helipad and a training area.
The new brigade station will include three truck bays, a multi-purpose training and meeting space, kitchen, storage areas, and male and female amenities with lockers and showers.
The centre is being built on a site opposite the existing facility, allowing both the RFS and Narrabri Shire Council to better use available space. The current building will be returned to council once the project is complete.
NSW RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin said the centre would enhance coordination during emergencies.
“This new facility will significantly strengthen operational capability during major incidents,” he said.
“Co-locating a multi-agency Emergency Operations Centre means we can work seamlessly with partner agencies when it matters most.
“It will provide our members with state-of-the-art facilities to support their critical work protecting communities.”
Construction began in early 2025 and is expected to finish by mid-2026.
