New England felt maker Jo Barr is heading to the Australian Sheep and Wool Show in Ballarat next weekend, bringing her distinctive handcrafted hats and fashion pieces to the country’s biggest celebration of wool.
Known for her label JAMB Hats, Jo creates wearable art using only Australian-grown wool, with no synthetic fibres or chemical stiffeners. Her work will be on display alongside some of the best in the industry, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty, sustainability and versatility of wool up close.
Based in farm studios in Currabubula and Walcha, Jo’s designs are completely handmade using traditional wet felting techniques. Each piece — from bold felted fedoras to reversible swing coats — reflects her passion for wool as a creative medium.
“I love taking these traditional skills to creatives and fashion enthusiasts alike in different locations – there’s something really powerful about sitting at a table, wool in hand, creating together and seeing their unique piece emerge,” Jo said.
“It’s slow, tactile, and connects people to the wonders of Australian wool heritage, the land and most importantly, to each other.”
That connection was recognised at the 2024 Fleece To Fashion Awards in Armidale, where Jo was awarded the Established Designers Encouragement Award. Her winning ensemble featured a felted fedora-style hat, matching clutch, and a reversible swing coat — all made from Australian Fine Merino wool.
Collaborations with Arts North West, regional galleries and local creatives, including artist Tania Hartigan, are helping Jo bring her work to broader audiences. A curated collection of JAMB Hats is currently available at the Tamworth Regional Gallery Shop.
Back in the New England, Jo is preparing to share her knowledge at a wet felt hat-making retreat and masterclass at The Art Shack in Wallabadah — an immersive creative weekend for those wanting to try the slow art of felting for themselves.
Looking further ahead, her creations will also be featured at AgQuip in Gunnedah in August and again at the 2025 Fleece To Fashion event in November.
