Do you support or advocate for a young person with a disability?

Whether that be a family member, a friend, or a client, then this FREE workshop is for you.

Resourcing Inclusive Communities is bringing their capacity building team to Tamworth to present their School to Work Workshop, on Monday, 25 November at the Ibis Styles Hotel.

The workshop is aimed at showing real employment is achievable for young people with a disability.

The project aims to inspire and equip students with disability through the support of families to seek meaningful, paid employment in the community.” said Talia Roshan, Capacity Development Coordinator with Resourcing Inclusive Community.

“Our School for Work workshop provides an opportunity for us to engage with families, professionals and educators to talk all things employment.”

“And when we say employment, we mean real work for real pay, so award wages, and work that’s valued, genuine and appreciated,”

“Where people with disability are working alongside people without disability and where work would be tailored or customised for organisations or businesses or crafted to suit a young person. “

The Workshop

The workshop will provide attendees with strategies and tools they can use to optimise employment outcomes for a person with disability.

It will focus on:

  1. Starting early
  2. Looking for employment opportunities in typical settings in the community
  3. Importance of having high expectations
  4. Work roles matching a person interests and contributions

“We also discuss the importance of cultivating community connections and looking at the ideal support relationships.” said Talia.

“We provide practical strategies that help families tailor an individual approach, to support more optimal employment outcomes so young people with disability can work in their community doing meaningful jobs and getting paid award wages.”

The workshop targets anyone with a connection to supporting a young person with a disability to help them achieve the best employment outcome.

And if you don’t have the answers, you might find them here.

“We acknowledge the high unemployment rate for people with disability and the lack of opportunity to work in meaningful employment in typical environments.”

“We see this as a fantastic opportunity to meet with families, to provide information and support, to help them in securing better employment outcomes for their young people with disability. “

As for professionals, “We do know that in order for change to occur, we need to have everyone in the community on board with the same messaging.”

“It is an interactive workshop and we do find that sometimes professionals may not have direct engagement with families, so, they’re not aware of families experiences and don’t have an understanding of what their experience, in particular around employment, has been.”

“This workshop provides that forum.”
