Bark Hut picnic area and campground in Mount Kaputar National Park has had a facelift, with a $650,000 upgrade making it easier to access for camper trailers and caravans now complete.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Area Manager Anton Groeneveld said the upgrade was essential to cater for the increasing number of larger vehicles used by people visiting the park.

“Not only were the facilities at the site in need of renewal, but over the past few years, we realised that the characteristics of visitors to the national park had changed.”

“More people are arriving with 4WD vehicles, camper trailers and campervans, and the old campsites could not accommodate these larger vehicles,” he said.

The $653,000 upgrade project was funded through the NSW Government’s largest investment in national parks history, with $450 million for more than 200 visitor infrastructure projects across the state. In the 2021/22 financial year, the NSW Government invested more than $5.9 million in visitor infrastructure for national parks within the Northern Inland footprint.

“The upgrades focused on improving access and manoeuvrability for 4WD vehicles, camper trailers and campervans, with five new purpose-designed sites for larger vehicles, as well as seven upgraded campsites for tents.”

The work included a variety of improved amenities, including new picnic tables and camping equipment, and making the visitor precinct wheelchair accessible.

“In addition to hot showers, flush toilets and a sheltered communal barbecue area, each of the 12 upgraded campsites now have access to individual wood-fired barbecues and picnic tables.”

“Bark Hut campground is perfect for getting a group of friends together, cooking up a feast and indulging in the natural wonders of this striking ancient region,” said Mr Groeneveld.

Campsites at Bark Hut campground must be booked in advance. Bookings can be made online or by calling the National Parks Contact Centre on 1300 072 757.
