Man charged following alleged armed robbery in Tamworth

A 39-year-old man has been charged over an alleged aggravated robbery in Tamworth last week, during which another man was reportedly threatened with a knife, assaulted and robbed.

Police were called to a service station on Jewry Street in Taminda about 3am on Friday, October 23, after receiving reports of an assault involving a knife.

Officers found a 36-year-old man with minor shoulder injuries. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital.

Police allege the victim was confronted and assaulted by three men who stole cash, a watch and a mobile phone before he managed to escape to a nearby service station and seek help.

About 30 minutes later, officers located a hatchback in Taminda believed to be connected to the incident.

Police seized the vehicle and allegedly discovered a knife and .22-calibre ammunition inside.

Investigations led officers from the Western Region Operations Support Group to a property on Anthony Road in South Tamworth, where a search warrant was executed about 4pm that day.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and police allegedly seized several items believed to be connected to the robbery.

The man was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with aggravated robbery, intentionally choking a person without consent (domestic violence-related) and common assault (domestic violence-related).

He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on Saturday, October 24, where bail was again refused.

He is scheduled to appear before Tamworth Local Court on Wednesday, December 23.

Police have not indicated whether further arrests are expected.
