A man believed to be in his 80s has died after his car collided with a truck on the highway near Moree, leaving a burning truck and a badly damaged car on either side of the road.
Emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, near Success Park Road, shortly before 2pm on Sunday, 27 September, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.
It was a confronting scene for emergency services, with multiple police, fire, and ambulance crews attending.
The male driver of the car could not be revived and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.
Significant debris was strewn across the long straight stretch of the Namoi Highway, just past the Moree Rest Stop. The truck was on one side of the road, on fire, and the badly damaged white 4WD was on the other.
A passenger in the car, a 74-year-old woman, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries before being taken to Moree Hospital.
The driver of the truck was not injured and was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze in the truck.
The Namoi Highway was closed north of the Croppa Moree Road well into the night while police investigated the crash.
Long diversions were needed, particularly for heavy vehicles, while the Crash Investigation Unit gathered evidence at the scene.
Police have established a crime scene and started an investigation into the crash. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
