The intersection of George Street and River Street in Moonbi has reopened to traffic following extensive reconstruction works to repair flood and storm damage from 2022.
The project included road and causeway repairs, new signage and guardrail, and drainage improvements, funded through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Tamworth Regional Council secured $1.45 million through the DRFA, covering the full cost of the damage repair works. The council carried out design work while funding was sought, before Stripes Civil Pty Ltd was awarded the construction contract.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said restoring the connection was about more than reopening a road.
“Restoring this connection is about more than reopening a road, it is about helping local residents, businesses and visitors move around safely and confidently again,” she said.
NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said the project reflected the two governments working together to help councils rebuild.
“This project is another example of the Australian and NSW Governments working together through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to help councils rebuild essential infrastructure and support community recovery,” she said.
Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb welcomed the reopening for the Moonbi community.
“This is great news for the Moonbi community with cars now able to access George Street again,” he said.
