Sylvia’s Fabrics celebrates 50 years in Moree

Moree businesswoman Sylvia Broderick has been recognised for 50 years in business and as the longest-serving tenant of the Council-owned Max Centre.

Moree Plains Shire Council marked the milestone on Friday, 21 August, with a surprise celebration outside Sylvia’s Fabrics, attended by Sylvia’s family, friends and members of the community.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled in Sylvia’s honour, recognising five decades of service to the Moree community.

Mayor Susannah Pearse presented the plaque to Sylvia and congratulated her on the milestone and her longstanding contribution to the district.

Sylvia established Sylvia’s Fabrics in Heber Street in 1976 and continues to work in the business today, supplying customers with fabrics, sewing materials and equipment.

The celebration was organised with the help of Sylvia’s granddaughters, Nicole and Heidi, who wanted to recognise their grandmother’s contribution to Moree and her enduring commitment to the business.

For Sylvia, one of the greatest rewards of running the business has been serving the local community and welcoming visitors to the region.

Pearse said Sylvia’s story was a wonderful example of the people who make Moree Plains such a special place.

“Fifty years in business is an incredible achievement, but Sylvia’s contribution goes well beyond the doors of her shop,” Pearse said.

“Sylvia’s Fabrics has been part of the fabric of Moree for five decades and Sylvia herself has become a much-loved and familiar face to generations of customers. Council is incredibly proud to recognise her contribution and celebrate this special milestone with her and her family and friends.”

The celebrations continued at the Bank Art Museum Moree (BAMM), where musician Rachel Cubis performed her latest music.

Over five decades, Sylvia has helped customers bring their projects to life and welcomed visitors from across Australia to her store. Her passion for the business and the people she serves has remained central to Sylvia’s Fabrics.

Sylvia’s contribution to Moree extends beyond her business. She has volunteered with the Moree Evening VIEW Club and Moree’s Catholic Women’s League.

Her community service was recognised in 2023 when she was named Moree Plains Shire Senior Citizen of the Year for her contribution as a volunteer and ambassador for the community.

Moree Plains Shire Council congratulates Sylvia on 50 years in business and thanks her for her ongoing contribution to the Moree Plains community.
