New England author Bronnie Ware, whose non-fiction books have sold more than one million copies, is turning her hand to fiction with the release of her first novel, Kookaburra.
The former Tamworth student is best known for The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, which has been published in 32 languages.
Her new book takes readers to a fictional rural Australian village grappling with desperately scarce rain, where friendships are tested and questions of loyalty, love and resilience come to the fore.
Centred on three friends, Kookaburra explores relationships, personal growth and the strength people can find during difficult times.
While the story is fictional, Ware has drawn inspiration from the landscapes, relationships and resilience of rural Australian communities.
At its heart, the novel asks how far people will truly go for love.
“I’ve spent much of my career writing non-fiction,” said Ware.
“Writing a novel gave me the opportunity to explore the emotional lives of characters and tell a story that has been building within me for a long time, including around the importance of mates.”
After years of working with traditional publishers, Ware has chosen to independently publish Kookaburra.
The novel will be released on September 9, with Ware holding a launch event in Uralla on Saturday, September 19.
The event will give readers an opportunity to hear about Ware’s move from million-selling non-fiction author to novelist and have copies of the book signed.
