Eligible Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) customers can now upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) without signing up to a high-speed broadband plan, following a change introduced by nbn in July.
The change applies to more than 1,200 homes and businesses in the Tenterfield area, allowing eligible customers to request a full fibre upgrade regardless of the nbn speed tier they choose.
Previously, most FTTC customers were required to order a residential broadband service based on the nbn wholesale 100/40 Mbps speed tier or above to qualify for an upgrade to FTTP.
Acting Head of Regional Engagement NSW Matt Armstrong said the change would allow more customers to access the benefits of a full fibre connection.
“More Australians than ever are upgrading to full fibre and realising the benefits of greater reliability, faster speeds, and better customer experience,” he said.
“This change makes it easier for even more Australians to experience those benefits, while accelerating the removal of ageing nbn copper from the network.”
FTTC connections use a combination of fibre and legacy copper cabling, with the final connection from the kerb to the premises delivered over copper. An upgrade to FTTP replaces that remaining copper with fibre optic cable, improving network reliability and enabling access to faster broadband speeds.
nbn said the move would also help accelerate the retirement of its legacy copper network while delivering a more resilient service for customers.
Armstrong said full fibre was better equipped to withstand extreme weather events while supporting future demand.
“Full fibre not only offers multi-gig speeds, but is also far more reliable, more responsive, and more resilient through storms, floods and fires.
“The scalability of fibre means we’re not only delivering a better service today, but ensuring our network can continue to grow with the rapidly evolving needs of customers for decades to come.”
