Five teens injured, one critical, in East Tamworth crash

Double demerit points will apply for the holiday season

Five Tamworth teenagers are in hospital, one with critical head injuries, after the car they were travelling in hit a tree in East Tamworth overnight.

Emergency services were called to King George V Avenue about 8.40pm on Friday, 10 July, after a sedan carrying five 17-year-olds left the road. The rear right-passenger side of the car struck a tree.

Three girls and two boys were injured in the crash.

A 17-year-old girl seated in the driver’s-side back seat suffered critical head injuries and has been flown to John Hunter Hospital. A 17-year-old boy travelling in the left-side back seat was thrown from the car on impact and has also been flown to John Hunter Hospital with spinal injuries.

The alleged driver, a 17-year-old girl and P1 licence holder, suffered head and facial injuries. She has undergone mandatory testing.

A third 17-year-old girl, believed to have been the front-seat passenger, escaped with relatively minor injuries. A second 17-year-old boy, who was in the middle rear seat, is being assessed for leg and back injuries.

These three remain in Tamworth Base Hospital. Police have been told their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A crime scene has been established at the site, with specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit assisting local police. Inquiries are continuing.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
