Council appoints two members to Aboriginal Consultative Committee

Preston Connors and Yoorana Delaney have been appointed as community representatives on Inverell Shire Council’s Aboriginal Consultative Committee for a two-year term.

The appointments follow a recruitment process conducted after the committee sought to expand its membership to help address attendance challenges. Council endorsed the addition of two community representative positions and called for nominations in May.

Following an assessment of nominations, Council selected Connors and Delaney to join the committee.

Established in 2014, the Aboriginal Consultative Committee includes representatives from the Ashford Local Aboriginal Land Council, the Anaiwan Local Aboriginal Land Council and members of the wider community. The committee provides a forum for engagement between Council and Aboriginal communities and contributes to discussions on matters affecting Aboriginal people across the shire.

Council also noted that Malcolm Talbot is able to participate in the committee through his existing representation of the Ashford Local Aboriginal Land Council.

The committee supports initiatives that strengthen relationships, promote understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and heritage, and ensure Aboriginal perspectives are considered in Council decision-making.

“The Aboriginal Consultative Committee continues to provide valuable advice and connection between Council and the community. We welcome the interest shown by community members in being part of this important work and look forward to the Committee continuing to support cultural understanding and positive outcomes for Aboriginal people across the Inverell Shire.” said Mayor Kate Dight said.
