Telstra upgrades to improve connectivity for Moonbi community

Moonbi residents and businesses are set to benefit from improved mobile connectivity, with Telstra upgrading its local mobile base station to enhance 4G performance and introduce new 5G coverage to the area.

The investment is aimed at supporting the growing connectivity needs of the community, with the upgraded site expected to deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and reduced congestion, particularly during peak periods.

Telstra Regional General Manager Michael Marom said reliable connectivity remained critical for regional communities.

“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country,” Marom said.

“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion for customers.”

Marom said the rollout of 5G technology would also deliver long-term benefits for the region.

“Bringing 5G to the area is also a major milestone, delivering greater capacity and even faster speeds,” he said.

Upgrade works will begin on 1 June 2026 and are expected to continue for nine days.

To safely complete the works, the mobile site will need to be temporarily switched off for up to 10 hours each day. During these periods, some Telstra customers in the area may experience disruptions to mobile services.

Marom said Telstra would work to minimise interruptions wherever possible.

“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible,” he said.

Telstra mobile customers will receive an SMS advising them of the upcoming works.

The temporary outage will not affect NBN, satellite internet services, PSTN landline services or mobile coverage from other providers.

Any calls to Triple Zero made from a Telstra mobile while the site is offline will automatically connect to another available mobile network for emergency service access.

Telstra customers can continue making calls and sending texts during service disruptions by enabling Wi-Fi Calling. Available on most modern smartphones, the free feature allows mobile calls and messages to be sent and received over a Wi-Fi connection.

Local businesses are also encouraged to speak with their bank about connecting EFTPOS terminals to an NBN or Wi-Fi connection to help avoid delays in processing transactions during the works.
