Third motorcycle fatality in a week closes New England Highway

A motorcyclist has died in a crash near Wallabadah, the third motorcycle fatality on New England roads in less than a week.

Emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Wallabadah, about 55 kilometres south of Tamworth, at about 2.50pm on Sunday following reports of a motorcycle crash.

The rider died at the scene.

Police established a crime scene and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, with the New England Highway closed in both directions for several hours while specialist officers examine the scene.

Diversions are currently in place along Wallabadah Rd from Wallabadah to Quirindi, then Kamilaroi Hwy. Suitable for both directions and all vehicles up to 25m B-doubles. Diversions will add up to 15 minutes of extra travel time.

Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1, 2, & 3 vehicles travelling under a notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternative route.

Operators of Class 1, 2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR.

The death follows two other fatal motorcycle crashes across the New England region in recent days.

On Friday afternoon, a female rider believed to be in her 40s was killed after her motorcycle left the road and crashed on Warialda Road at Warialda.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 4.50pm on Friday 22 May. Despite the efforts of first responders, the woman died at the scene. Formal identification is yet to be completed.

Earlier in the week, on Monday 18 May, a 70-year-old motorcyclist died after his motorcycle left the road on Thunderbolts Way at Uralla.

Bystanders commenced first aid before paramedics arrived, but the rider could not be revived.

While police have not indicated any link between the three motorcycle crashes, each remains under investigation.

Reports will be prepared for the Coroner in all three cases.
