Junior hockey is back across the New England region, with Hockey New England officially launching its 2026 season to strong community support and packed sidelines.
Families, players and volunteers turned out in force for the opening weekend, with busy car parks and full sidelines highlighting the enthusiasm for junior sport across the region.
The Saturday morning competition features nearly 30 teams across five age divisions, from Under 8s through to Under 16s, providing opportunities for young players throughout New England to develop their skills and enjoy the game in a supportive environment.
“It was a fantastic day for our local competition,” said Nicole, a Hockey New England spokesperson. “What a sight to see so many kids back out on the turf and so many parents lining the sidelines to cheer them on.”
The competition structure has been designed to support players at every stage of development, with Under 8s and Under 10s focused on participation and foundational skills, while Under 12s introduce more structured gameplay. Junior Division 1 and Division 2 competitions continue to provide competitive pathways for older players across the region.
Friday afternoon Under 12 and Under 16 competitions are also returning this season, involving another eight teams and giving young athletes greater flexibility to balance hockey with other sports commitments.
Hockey New England said the successful start reflected months of preparation by volunteers, junior convenors, club co-ordinators and officials working behind the scenes to deliver the season.
The association also continues to strengthen local leadership pathways, with junior players taking on umpiring roles under the guidance of experienced mentors.
“We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated volunteer base,” she added. “From the organisers to the young players who give back by umpiring, it truly takes a whole community to pull this together.”
Hockey New England is now looking ahead to a season focused on participation, sportsmanship and the continued growth of regional hockey across New England.
