Armidale residents are being encouraged to take a step towards better heart health this Heart Week, with a local walking group inviting the community to get involved.
Heart Foundation Walking Coordinator Alicia Webb said it is never too late to prioritise heart health and is urging locals to join a walk during the awareness week.
Heart Week runs from May 4 to May 10, with walks taking place across the region and throughout the state to promote cardiovascular health.
In Armidale, the event will coincide with the group’s regular weekly walk, with organisers hoping to welcome new participants.
“The recommendation is that we have 150 to 300 minutes of activity per week and walking is a really low impact way of getting our cardiovascular system working and allowing people to exercise in a way that doesn’t feel too strenuous, but they’re still out walking and making sure that they’re getting their heart rate up,”
“There are lots of health benefits to getting out and just having a walk a couple of times a week.
“This walk, we’re going to wear red and we’re inviting people to come along and try it out and see if they want to join our group on a more regular basis.”
Residents are invited to “Wear red and walk” with the Armidale Walkers, a free local walking group.
The walk will take place at Beardy Street Mall, Armidale, NSW, on Monday, May 4, from 4pm to 5.30pm.
The group meets at the Eastern Stage and welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Strollers and dogs on leads are also welcome.
Participants are encouraged to bring a hat and a drin kbottle. Attendees can look for the group dressed in red.
