Council considers sale of Sporties carpark land in Inverell

A proposal to sell land used as a long-standing carpark for Inverell Sporties Club is under consideration, with Inverell Shire Council beginning preliminary steps to explore the request.

The land, located adjacent to 35 Glen Innes Road, has been used as a dedicated carpark for more than 30 years and forms part of the club’s existing operations.

Council confirmed it has received a formal request from Inverell Sporties Ltd to purchase the approximately 4,000 square metre site, which is currently owned by council and classified as community land.

At its April meeting, council considered a report outlining the proposal and the steps required if it chooses to proceed.

These include entering into negotiations based on an independent market valuation, obtaining a further report to determine an appropriate sale price, and potentially beginning the statutory planning process required for any future sale.

Mayor Kate Dight said the proposal was still at an early stage.

“This is a preliminary stage in considering a request from a long-standing local organisation,” she said.

“The land has been used as a carpark for decades, but any potential change requires a thorough and legislated process, including opportunities for community feedback.”

Council noted the land is part of the broader Northey Park reserve but does not currently function as public recreation space.

Any future sale would be subject to a full planning and governance process, including public exhibition, giving residents the chance to have their say.

Council said no final decision has been made and further assessment would be required before any sale could proceed.
