Uralla will host its first-ever silent disco later this month, with a free under-18s event aimed at giving local young people something fun to do close to home during NSW Youth Week.
The event will be held at Uralla Memorial Hall from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, 24 April, featuring three live DJs, lighting effects and a range of activities for attendees.
Uralla Shire Council Mayor Robert Bell said the event had been planned to provide a local option for families during a time when travel plans may be changing.
“This time of year typically sees families heading off on holidays, but with rising costs such as fuel, some of those plans may have been scaled back or cancelled,” he said.
“We wanted to make sure there is something free, inclusive and enjoyable for young people to do right here at home.”
The silent disco format allows participants to listen to music through wireless headphones, with the option to switch between different DJs playing a variety of dance styles.
Event coordinator Chris Clark said the format also makes the event more accessible for a wider range of participants.
“A silent disco is particularly great for young people on the autism spectrum,” he said.
“If it becomes overstimulating, the volume can be adjusted or the headset removed entirely, allowing you to take a break while still enjoying the atmosphere.”
The event will include a chill-out zone, outdoor seating and a canteen offering snacks and drinks.
Funded through the NSW Government for Youth Week and supported by Uralla Shire Council, the initiative is part of a broader effort to provide inclusive activities for young people in the region.
Bookings are essential for the free event, with places available by contacting the Uralla Visitor Information Centre on 6778 6420.
