High speed EV chargers to benefit residents and visitors

Two Superfast Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed in Armidale’s Cinders Lane Carpark and will benefit residents and visitors alike.

Officially opened on Monday 2 March, the chargers significantly expand public access to reliable, high-speed EV charging infrastructure in the Armidale region.

Mayor Sam Coupland encouraged residents to take advantage of the new chargers, conveniently located in Armidale’s CBD.

“The chargers provide an efficient charging experience. They can service up to four vehicles at once and allow drivers to charge from 20% to 80% in under an hour – just enough time to grab a coffee or run some errands,” he said.

“And for the first two weeks, charging is free!”

Council is offering a two-week promotion of free charging from 2 to 16 March. After that time, the cost to car-users charging their vehicles will be 60 cents per kWh.

“For our region, the chargers bring both environmental and economic benefits,” Mayor Coupland said. “Fast charging encourages visitors to stop, stay, and spend time in the town centre while their vehicles recharge.”

According to Mayor Coupland, this initiative strongly aligns with Council’s long-term vision and strategic priorities as described in the Community Strategic Plan, the Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS), and the Brilliant Regions Strategy. It also directly supports Council’s EcoARC and Project Zero30 targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and showcasing tangible action in building a cleaner future for the community.

“As Armidale Regional Council operates with renewable energy (not coal-fired electricity), we are fortunate to be able to reassure drivers that when using these new chargers, they will be charging their vehicles with renewable energy.”

The chargers, installed by EVSE Australia, will run on Exploren EV Charging Software widely used in Australia and New Zealand.

This project is funded by Armidale Regional Council via the Oxley Solar Farm Planning Agreement ($240,000) and by Armidale Regional Council ($61,100).
