New England students medal at NSW Rowing Championships

Storms may have cancelled several races, but it was still a standout day for The Armidale School (TAS) at the NSW State Rowing Championships, held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Sunday, 22 February, with crews claiming one gold and one bronze medal.

Bella Henderson, a boarder from Scone, won the NSW Schoolgirl Single Scull Championship over 2000m, leading from start to finish and crossing the line in 8:12.84 – almost two boat lengths ahead of her nearest rival.

Later in the day, Tildy Coddington secured bronze in the Under 16 Women’s Single Scull (1000m). She was the fastest NSW competitor in the event, finishing behind R MacLeod from Commercial Rowing Club, Queensland, and S Quirk from Corio Bay, Victoria. Quirk had earlier pipped Coddington into second place in the semi-finals.

In other results, a TAS boys’ crew finished fourth in their heat of the Under 17 Men’s Coxed Quad.

TAS’s Head of Rowing Harry Rorke said it was a terrific regatta for all crews.

“To finish on the podium at state championships is a huge credit to Bella and Tildy, who both rowed out of their skins. More broadly though, it was a terrific regatta for all our crews who competed, and they are committed to finishing the season well at the schoolboy and schoolgirl heads of the river in three weeks’ time.”
