Toyota FanZone was the scene of a crime of appreciation on Wednesday morning when Lyn Bowtell was inducted into Tamworth’s Galaxy of Stars.
Last year’s inductee and good mate, Luke O’Shea joined the 10-time Golden Guitar winner for her final song on FanZone and then encouraged her to stay on the stage as the presentation was made.
It was a moment of good karma, as Lyn surprised Luke with his induction on the same stage last year.
“Karma’s a lovely thing, ladies and gentlemen. It comes back when you least expect it,” Luke said.
“You could be up here and be totally blindsided by the fact that this whole music industry and this whole town see something very, very special in this person right here next to us.”
Lyn Bowtell said the Tamworth Country Music Festival always took her back to being the teenager who first came 34 years ago to perform.
“I came to this festival when I was 14 years old. We stayed at the Paradise Caravan Park, learned how to boot scoot, played our guitars on the river, and walked down every day to experience the festival,” Lyn said.
“To be back here now, I still feel like that kid when I arrive at the festival. It is an absolute honour to be part of the Academy, and an honour to be part of this festival. To be included in the Galaxy of Stars out there at TRECC is huge for me. Thank you all so much for this great honour.”
As well as being an award-winning artist in her own right, Lyn is also the director of The CMAA Academy of Country Music and runs, SHE Retreats, female-only songwriting retreats around the country and is a mentor to many.
“I think mentoring others makes what I do in music so much deeper. It gives me that sense of fulfilment that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I think that that’s truly where you live an existence that is fulfilled, is when you give back, when you help other people grow and learn from your mistakes. They teach me a lot. Their experiences are rich and important and together we can make it an even better industry in Australia here for country music.”
“I just feel like I’m starting to get good and I feel like I’m just starting to understand who I am as an artist,” Lyn said.
“I don’t get nervous anymore: I just have fun. I feel I’ll be in this industry till I’m unable to be fit to go out.”
Luke said Lyn was a deserving recipient.
“It’s just been wonderful to watch you keep evolving as an artist and this is only just another little stepping stone on the way, but a beautiful stepping stone, but a well-deserved stepping stone in itself,” Luke said.
“But, you know, Lyn, you are a true star and worthy of this award.”
Tamworth Mayor Russell Webb said the Galaxy of Stars honoured artists who had made a significant contribution to the country music industry.
“This year’s recipient is a performer of remarkable talent, someone who has earned the respect of her fellow musicians and has been a generous mentor to the industry,” he said.
Festival Manager Barry Harley said the accolade was thoroughly deserved and reflects the enduring popularity with audiences and industry.
“Lyn is not only an incredible singer, but an amazing songwriter, guitarist and performer,” Mr Harley said.
“We are so honoured to induct Lyn into the Galaxy of Stars. Congratulations Lyn on joining this illustrious group.”
Tamworth Regional Council Country Music Co-ordinator Cheryl Brown said it was difficult to capture everything that Lyn brought to Australian music.
“She is an extraordinary singer, songwriter, performer and mentor,” Cheryl said.
“Anyone who has seen Lyn perform live never forgets the moment they hear her sing. She creates an experience that is moving, uplifting, and always delivered with her trademark humour.”
“From country music clubs on the Darling Downs to major stages across Australia and the world, Lyn Bowtell has earned her place as one of this country’s most respected artists.”
“We recognise an artist whose talent, generosity and contribution to Australian country music continue to inspire us all.”
Lyn’s Galaxy of Stars brass plaque has been installed in the forecourt of the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) next to Luke’s plaque.
The newest inductee to the Galaxy of Stars will have her special Lyn Bowtell and her Famous Friends show today, Thursday, January 22, at 1pm at Tamworth Town Hall.
