A man has died after being shot by police during a concern for welfare check on a rural property near Gunnedah, with a critical incident investigation now underway.
Police were called to a home on Quia Road, Gunnedah, about 75 kilometres west of Tamworth, about 1.40pm on Friday following reports prompting a concern for welfare.
Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and spoke with a man outside the home. Police said the man then went back inside the house before returning armed with a bow and arrow.
Police returned to their vehicle for cover. A police firearm was discharged after the man aimed the bow and arrow at officers.
The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a gunshot wound, but he died at the property.
A critical incident investigation has commenced following the man’s death. A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The investigation will be reviewed by the NSW Police Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
