As 2025 draws to a close, Black Mountain Nursery is looking back on a year marked by reflection, celebration and community appreciation.

This December, the much-loved local business commemorated its 40th anniversary, a significant milestone for the nursery established by Pam and Gordon Youman in 1985. What began with a few farm trees in a backyard vegetable garden has grown into a 10-acre operation supplying plants across the region and interstate, employing 15 local staff, and becoming a cornerstone of the local horticultural industry.

The highlight of the year came on Sunday, 7 December, when the nursery hosted a community celebration marking four decades in business. The event included a presentation, the official opening of a newly constructed waterwheel, and the announcement of the winners of the nurseryโ€™s anniversary prize draw.

โ€œI believe we may be the highest nursery in Australia,โ€ said co-founder Gordon Youman during the event. โ€œLike many businesses, we have survived many challengesโ€”from droughts and hailstorms to snowstorms. Pam has developed a great trade name for the nursery through her industry networking and her business reputation, which is a great credit to her and our staff.โ€

Reflecting on the anniversary, Pam Youman emphasised the importance of community support over the years.

โ€œThe day is not only to celebrate 40 years in business but to thank customers, staff, associated businesses, families and individuals who have supported our journey over the years,โ€ she said.

Looking back, 2025 proved to be more than just a milestoneโ€”it was a year of gratitude and renewed purpose. For the Youmans and their team, the anniversary served not only as a moment to honour the past, but also to reaffirm their commitment to the region and the values that have shaped the nursery from day one.
