There’s something truly magical about watching a Christmas classic under the stars, and the University of New England’s Festive Flicks at Bool is set to deliver just that. Returning to the iconic lawns of Booloominbah this December, the much-loved community event invites locals, students and families from across the region to come together and celebrate the season in a relaxed, festive atmosphere.
Held on the historic grounds of UNE’s Armidale campus, Festive Flicks at Bool has become a highlight of the local calendar, combining the nostalgia of outdoor cinema with the joy of shared community spirit.
“Festive Flicks at Bool is about bringing the community together in one of the most beautiful and recognisable settings in the New England region,” a UNE Media spokesperson said.
“We believe there’s something special about gathering on Booloominbah’s historic lawns as the sun sets while sharing a classic Christmas film under the stars with your friends and family.”
This year’s feature film is Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, a choice sure to spark smiles and memories across generations.
“It’s funny, heartwarming and full of that nostalgic festive charm that brings families together,” UNE said. “It’s the kind of film parents remember watching as kids and are now keen to share with their own children. And who doesn’t enjoy a bit of Kevin McCallister chaos during the holidays?”
The event promises plenty of pre-film fun and flavour for all ages. From face painting, cookie decorating and heli hoops to the ever-popular ninja slide, there’s no shortage of entertainment for kids. Parents can relax on the lawns with a drink or snack from one of the many food vendors, including New England Cake Co, Swirlicious, Thai Satay & Bubble Tea, and Ol’ Mate Coffee, while UNE Life Catering keeps the popcorn and bar flowing.
As the sun sets over Booloominbah, families can expect an evening brimming with Christmas spirit.
“We’re creating a warm, festive and family-friendly atmosphere where everyone can relax and enjoy the magic of Christmas,” UNE said.
“There’ll be Christmas activities throughout the evening, including a visit from Santa, and plenty of space to spread out picnic blankets and enjoy the beautiful heritage surroundings.”
This year, Festive Flicks at Bool also forms part of a wider regional celebration.
“This is part of a cross-promotional campaign across five Christmas events happening throughout the New England region this November and December,” UNE Media said.
“It’s been great collaborating with our local councils to celebrate the festive season together across Uralla, Glen Innes, Armidale, and Guyra.”
Beyond the festivities, Festive Flicks at Bool carries a deeper purpose, strengthening the bond between the university and the wider community.
“UNE has always been part of the New England region, and events like Festive Flicks at Bool are a great way to open our campus to the community and strengthen those connections,” UNE said. “We want our campus to be a place where memories are made, not just for our students but for local families as well.”
And best of all, it’s completely free.
“Bring your picnic blankets, camping chairs and Christmas cheer,” UNE encouraged.
“We look forward to seeing the community come together on the lawns of Booloominbah for what should be a great evening. And if you haven’t been to Booloominbah before, it’s the perfect chance to see one of Armidale’s most beautiful heritage sites.”
Festive Flicks at Bool is a celebration of the region’s sense of togetherness, and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.
