A young New Englander has won a coveted spot in a prestigious annual leadership competition for her exceptional entry on the role of technology redefining the future of gender equality in rural Australian communities.

Caitlin Evans of Narrabri will join five other winners from other Australian states and territories at Country to Canberra’s Power Trip – an all-expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital to develop the leadership potential of rural youth – next month.

“Being selected to represent NSW in the Country to Canberra Leadership Competition is an honour that I am very grateful for,” said Caitlin.

“It is a privilege to represent rural NSW and the diverse community I love, and to have the ability to speak about their interests.”

Since its inception in 2014, the Country to Canberra Leadership Competition has welcomed entries from thousands of young rural women and non-binary people across Australia.

This year, winners responded to the theme ‘Technology and innovation is redefining the future of gender equality in our rural communities’ in creative, thoughtful, and inspiring ways.

“We are thrilled to welcome Caitlin on our award-winning Power Trip, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and to have her voice heard by leaders and changemakers,” Country to Canberra CEO Courtney Bailey said.

“We are looking forward to helping her translate her strengths into practical, sustainable actions for the benefit of her local community, NSW, and Australia,” added Ms Bailey.

While on the Power Trip, the winners will experience four days of inspiring events including leadership workshops, meetings with state and federal politicians, and mentorship opportunities.

Past winners of Country to Canberra’s Leadership Competition have gone on to receive national awards for community leadership, been appointed to Boards, and even stood for political office.

Caitlin said she was looking forward to developing her communication skills and to connect with other entrants from across Australia.

“I can’t wait to improve myself as a leader and public speaker over the course of the Power Trip,” she said.

“I also want to discuss the problems faced by rural women and therefore improve my problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”
