Former staff and students are expected to come from around the world for the 50-year anniversary of O’Connor Catholic College in Armidale.
The Golden Anniversary will see hundreds of people attend the celebration and remember the history of the college.
The anniversary organising committee hopes the reunion will attract as many people as possible who have been a student or staff member at O’Connor Catholic College during the past 50 years.
“O’Connor Catholic College was established in 1975 through the amalgamation of two of Armidale’s most respected schools – St Ursula’s College, founded in 1882 by Sister Mary Cordula, and De La Salle College, established in 1906,” organiser Christine Gerard said.
“The College was named after Bishop Patrick O’Connor, who served as Bishop of Armidale from 1904 to 1930 and was a passionate advocate for Catholic education in the Diocese.
“This unique merger united two proud traditions and laid the foundation for a vibrant, co-educational secondary school serving Years 7 to 12.”
Ms Gerard said Connor’s influence extends far beyond the school gates, with many highly successful graduates excelling in a wide range of fields.
“Several former students have represented Australia in various sports, while others have built distinguished careers as judges, Queen’s Counsel, university professors, accountants, solicitors, and more.
These achievements are a testament to the strong foundation provided by an O’Connor education – one that combines academic rigour, Catholic values, and a deep sense of community.”
Former Principal Tony Dubois reflected on the significance of the occasion, describing 50 years as a remarkable milestone in the College’s journey.
“I’m looking forward to the celebrations on October 4 and hope to catch up with past principals, staff, and students, and relive some of the great experiences the college has had over this time,” he said.
Current Principal Phillip Gibney emphasised the importance of the anniversary in the context of Armidale’s broader educational heritage.
“The merger in 1975 of De La Salle Boys College and St Ursula’s Girls College to form O’Connor brought together two proud traditions – both of which were the first schools of their kind in Australia.
“Armidale has a long and rich history in education, especially within the realm of Catholic education, and we are incredibly fortunate to be part of such a unique and special history, born from the charisms and traditions of two highly regarded Catholic institutions.”
Today, O’Connor Catholic College continues to uphold a tradition of excellence across spiritual, academic, and co-curricular pursuits.
Students excel not only in their studies but also in sport, agriculture, the creative and performing arts, public speaking, and vocational education.
With expansive grounds, historic buildings, and a commitment to service, the college remains a cornerstone of the Catholic and broader New England communities.
The anniversary celebrations will be held on Friday 4 October 2025.
School tours will run from 2-3 pm, followed by a special Mass at 5 pm in the College Chapel.
The evening will continue with a reunion dinner and live music from 6 pm. Ticket sales close on 31 August, and those interested can contact occreunion@arm.catholic.edu.au for more information.
