Tamworth Regional Council is calling on Council employees and residents of the Tamworth community to take part in the 2025 Local Government Blood Drive.

From this week, Lifeblood’s Local Government Blood Drive will see employees, councillors, and community members rally together to donate blood and plasma in donor centres across the country.

Tamworth Regional Council have set a goal to save 1,000 lives, throughout the three-month period.

In addition to promoting Council staff involvement, Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb is calling on the wider community to give blood and plasma donations during this time at the Tamworth Donor Centre.

“There is a big shortage of blood donations across the nation, but that’s why these challenges are so important, we are trying to fill that gap.”

“We are looking to get family and friends across our region involved in the challenge, one blood donation could save up to three lives, so if we are able to make 333 donations, that equates to 1,000 lives saved” he added.

“We want to get as many people as we can, donating blood, to help save lives across our community. If you are new or already donating blood, you are able to link your donation to the council challenge, simply speak to the staff at the lifeblood centre during your next donation.”

General Manager Paul Bennett said the Council has had a long history with the blood drive.

“We are very proud to be apart of the challenge again this year, we have been apart of the challenge since its inception. We have a strong history in the challenge, winning in 2016 and 2017, giving more blood than any other council. In more recent years with bigger councils such as Blacktown and Gold Coast who have thousands and thousands of employees its hard to compete. However, we have still remained in the top categories over the years.”

“It’s not about the competition, it’s about getting people involved and getting them to give blood.”

“Our staff are exceptionally proud to be in this challenge. We have a little internal rivalry between each directorate at council, which is a little friendly competition.”

Friends and family play a part too.

“We certainly encourage our friends and family to give blood as well, especially during the cooler months in winter, this is the time when blood banks struggle.”
