Free uni prep info session for 2026 students

Local Year 12 graduates considering university in 2026 are invited to attend a free information session hosted by the University of Newcastle’s Department of Rural Health at the Tamworth Education Centre on Monday, 8 January, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The session aims to demystify the transition to university for students, and their families, who may be unsure about what to expect, from enrolment to accommodation, support services, and alternative entry pathways.

The idea for the event was sparked by conversations with young people in the region.

“This came from conversations I have had with local young people about going to university, and from my own memories of my first day of uni, when I was totally oblivious to what I was meant to be doing and how one ‘does’ uni,” said Associate Professor Luke Wakely.

“I have been fortunate to gain a little more experience in this space and thought that, together with some colleagues, we could share our insights to help those considering a university degree in 2026 hit the ground running.”

The session will include a presentation followed by an open Q&A, with current university students on hand to share their own experiences.

Attendees will receive practical advice on:

  • How to enrol and select subjects
  • Where to access student support services
  • Navigating accommodation options
  • What to expect in the first few weeks of uni
  • Alternate entry pathways, including those for First Nations students

“Join us for this free info session to help you understand uni, explore alternative entry pathways, and confidently take your next step,” said Wakely.

Whether students have already received an offer or are still weighing their options, the session aims to provide the clarity and confidence needed to move forward.

Parents and guardians are also encouraged to attend.
