Vernon Marshall: A Pioneer for LGBTQ+ Support in Regional Australia

August 20 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

In 1972, at age 62, Vernon launched what became known as the Camp-Gay Liberation Movement Tamworth, one of the early LGBTQ+ groups in regional Australia. Jody Ekert has spent several years researching his work and the wider history of the LGBTQ+ community and events in Tamworth and surrounds.

Jody is the guest speaker at the Tamworth Historical Society’s August Meeting, at 7:30pm on Wednesday 20th August. Everyone is invited to Calala Cottage Museum, 142 Denison Street, West Tamworth, to hear about Vernon’s work and her ongoing research into his life and advocacy and those of other local community groups. Help Jody fill in the blanks in Vernon’s work and discuss ideas on further avenues to explore.

Vernon Marshall was not just a German post-war immigrant accountant – he was a quiet trailblazer for queer visibility and support in regional Australia. His efforts resonate today, reminding us how one person can build connection and courageous activism in unlikely places.
