Inverell Shire residents are being invited to have their say on a draft strategy that will guide waste and resource recovery services for the next decade.
Inverell Shire Council has endorsed its Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2027–2036 for a 28-day public exhibition period.
The draft strategy sets out a framework for planning and delivering waste management and resource recovery services across the shire.
It aligns with council’s Community Strategic Plan, regional waste objectives and NSW waste management targets, while allowing for changes in industry, regulations and market conditions.
Council manages about 32,650 tonnes of waste each year, with around 70 per cent generated by non-domestic sources.
The strategy aims to improve the amount of waste diverted from landfill through a sustainable and circular approach.
Its objectives include increasing recycling and resource recovery, maintaining financially sustainable services, reducing environmental impacts, planning for future infrastructure and technologies and strengthening regional collaboration.
The strategy identifies four key focus areas: avoiding and reducing waste, increasing recycling and resource recovery, providing sustainable waste operations and building resilient, future-ready waste services.
Council says feedback received during the exhibition period will be used to refine the strategy and ensure it reflects community priorities and expectations.
The draft strategy is available through the Inverell Shire Council website and can also be viewed at the council administration centre at 144 Otho Street, Inverell.
Written submissions will be accepted until close of business on Monday, October 26.
