Young cricketers across Armidale are being urged to apply for the Waratahs Ian Campbell Scholarship, with nominations closing at the end of April.
The scholarship, awarded by The Tahs of Armidale, provides a pathway for players aged 16 and under to access high-level coaching and mentoring through a partnership with the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club.
Peter Langston, secretary of the Armidale Waratahs, said the program offers a rare opportunity for local players to develop their game.
“This is a unique opportunity for children 16 and under to access coaching and mentoring at the highest level of the game,” he said.
Valued at a minimum of $2,500 over three years, the scholarship provides $1,500 in the first year, followed by two potential payments of $500, supporting participation in development programs and training opportunities.
As part of the program, the successful recipient will attend coaching and mentoring sessions with Manly Warringah in September, gaining exposure to one of Sydney’s most successful grade cricket clubs.
Manly Warringah recently claimed the Sydney Premier Cricket First Grade title, were runners up in Second Grade and won all four Shires grades, while also fielding teams in the women’s competition.
Andrew Davis, President of The Tahs of Armidale, said the scholarship recognises more than just on-field performance.
“The scholarship recognises outstanding skill, promise, and attitude, as well as a strong desire to compete at the highest levels of the game,” he said.
He said the program was designed to support the development of young players as they progressed through the sport.
“We invite those interested in nominating a candidate for the 2026 Waratahs Ian Campbell Scholarship to complete the Scholarship Nomination Form,” he said.
Peter Langston said organisers were keen to see more applications this year.
“We would urge clubs, schools and parents to bring the information regarding the scholarship to the attention of players and their families,” he said.
Last year’s recipient, Brooke Moran, used the opportunity to train with Manly Warringah, including a one-on-one session with Australian player Hannah Dorrington, and received club kit as part of the program.
Her travel and accommodation were covered through the scholarship, and she was later accepted into Manly Warringah’s pathways program. During the season, she went on to represent NSW at the Under 15 and Under 19 All Schools Australian Championships, and has been announced as a member of the All Star Australian under 15 team.
A second applicant, Jacob Finlay, was also recognised last year, receiving a voucher after scoring his first senior century.
The scholarship honours the legacy of former Waratahs cricketer Ian Campbell, who was known for his dedication to developing young players and supporting their transition into senior cricket.
Nominations must be submitted through local clubs, with parent or guardian consent required.
